“Muddy Acres.” That’s what some called St. Clair Shores back in the day. Today, we know it as a vibrant city. St. Clair Shores, Michigan is located in Macomb County. It is not far from Detroit.

Let’s dive into the history of St. Clair Shores. French settlers inhabited this area as early as 1710. They called it L’anse Creuse, meaning Hollow Cove or Deep Bay. For many years, it was a rural area. People focused more on trapping and fishing than farming.

St. Clair Shores was part of Erin Township from 1843 to 1911. Later, the eastern part became Lake Township. St. Clair Shores became a village in 1925. It wasn’t until 1951 that it became a city.

During Prohibition, St. Clair Shores became a haven. It was favored by gamblers and rum runners. The city’s lakefront location and proximity to Canada made it ideal. Roadhouses and blind pigs thrived here.

Jefferson Beach Amusement Park was a major attraction from 1927 to 1959. It had the longest roller coaster in the United States. There was also a dance pavilion and a sandy beach. A fire in 1955 hurt the park. Tastes changed, and the park declined. Eventually, it was replaced by Jefferson Beach Marina.

Today, St. Clair Shores offers many things to do. Visit the Nautical Mile. This mile-long strip on Jefferson Avenue has a nautical theme. You can find shops, restaurants, and marinas here.

St. Clair Shores is also known for youth hockey. It was once home to Gordie Howe Hockeyland. The city has two indoor ice arenas.
