In 1892, a small group of Episcopalians in Quincy, Massachusetts, embarked on a mission. They dreamt of a new place of worship. This dream blossomed into the Saint Chrysostoms Church in the Wollaston neighborhood. The church was founded during Quincy’s transformation from a quiet farming community into a bustling industrial center. The first service at Saint Chrysostoms Church was held on Easter Day in 1892 in Perry’s Hall. A women’s guild quickly formed and chose the name “Saint Chrysostom,” an unusual choice at the time. One member remarked that there was no other church with that name “nearer than New York City.” Land at the corner of Hancock and Linden Streets was donated by the Taylor family. By the end of 1894, the first Saint Chrysostoms Church, a charming wooden structure, stood proudly on this spot. In 1904, Saint Chrysostoms Church officially became an independent parish within the Diocese of Massachusetts. Years later, the Jewell family, dedicated parishioners, left a generous trust. This trust funded the construction of a new granite church. The old wooden building was replaced in 1951 with this beautiful granite structure. The new Saint Chrysostoms Church boasts stunning stained-glass windows, three in the sanctuary and three in the narthex. The rector’s study is adorned with unique “linen fold” wood paneling. It also features leaded glass windows. These were originally part of Ralph Adams Cram’s offices in France and Boston. Saint Chrysostoms Church has remained a pillar of the community. Through the years, it has broadened its outreach programs. It even opened its doors to community groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Survival Inc., and the Scouts. The Mite Box Thrift Shop, established in 1975, is still run by church volunteers. It serves the community while providing financial support for Saint Chrysostoms Church. In 2003, Saint Chrysostoms Church embarked on another transformation. The old rectory was demolished to make way for condominiums. The proceeds from this project allowed the church to donate $100,000 to outreach programs. The rest was invested in the future of Saint Chrysostoms Church.
