How did a devastating fire lead to the rebirth of Saint Charles United Methodist Church? We are standing before the present-day church, a testament to the enduring spirit of this congregation. Saint Charles United Methodist Church has been a part of this community since 1869. It was first known as the St. Charles Methodist Episcopal Church. The original structure, a gift from St. Charles founder Charles Kimberley, once stood at the corner of Saginaw and Clinton Streets. Tragedy struck in 1938 when a fire destroyed the building. Undeterred, the congregation found a new home. They acquired an unused Baptist church building at Belle Avenue and Fulton Street, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to their faith. This resilience was tested once more in 1972. The acquired building, in dire need of costly repairs, faced demolition. From the ashes of the old, a new sanctuary rose on the same site. This current building, completed in 1975, stands as a symbol of renewal and hope. It has served the community ever since, its story woven into the fabric of Saint Charles. The church’s journey, marked by both adversity and unwavering faith, serves as an inspiration, reminding us that even in the face of hardship, hope and community endure.
