Gazing up at Saint Cecilia Parish, imagine the hopes and dreams of those who built it. Saint Cecilia Parish, nestled in Boston’s Back Bay, stands as a testament to the faith and perseverance of Irish immigrants. Established in 1888, this vibrant Catholic community was born from the desire of maids and coachmen, serving the Back Bay’s elite, to have a church of their own. They yearned for a place where their faith could flourish, close to where they lived and worked. From their meager earnings, they built this magnificent Romanesque structure, a beacon of hope and a symbol of their unwavering devotion. The church, dedicated in 1894, boasts stunning architecture, reflecting a 12th-century Norman style. Inside, the main altar, carved from a single block of Carrara marble, commands attention with its massive simplicity. Above it, a reproduction of da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” graces the center reredos, while a dome adorned with 24K gold rosettes shimmers above. The church’s rich history is etched into its very fabric. The square panels in the nave and arches display symbols of Our Lady, drawn from the Litany of Loreto. Circular panels showcase symbols from the lives of the apostles. The great window of the Assumption, installed during the Marian Year of 1954, fills the space originally intended for windows but left empty until then. It’s framed by the majestic oak cases of the organ. Music has always played a vital role at Saint Cecilia Parish. The original Hutchings-Votey organ, installed in 1902, was rebuilt and expanded over the years, culminating in the current Smith & Gilbert organ, with its four manuals, fifty-two ranks, and nearly 3,000 pipes. This grand instrument, dedicated in 1999, fills the church with glorious music, echoing the enduring spirit of the community. Today, Saint Cecilia Parish continues to thrive, embracing its rich history while welcoming the future. It’s a place where tradition and progress intertwine, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s a place where, just as in 1888, everyone is welcome. The spirit of those hardworking Irish immigrants lives on, reminding us that even from humble beginnings, great things can be achieved.
