Look closely at the terracotta tiles adorning the roof of St Benedict’s. They whisper tales of faith and community. St Benedict’s Church, also known as Father Breen Memorial Church, stands as a testament to Brisbane’s Catholic heritage. It serves as a memorial to Reverend James Benedict Breen. He dedicated many years as a parish priest at Kangaroo Point.

Archbishop Duhig recognized the need for a place of worship in this growing area. The story begins with Duhig’s vision to provide more churches for Brisbane’s expanding Catholic community. This led to the construction of St Benedict’s.

Duhig purchased land from Mr T. Gillam for £575. This land became a gift to the new parish, honoring Father Breen’s memory. Construction was awarded to J.G. Hobbs for £2278. The total cost reached almost £3060 including sanctuary, seating and architectural fees.

The foundation stone was laid on March 18, 1917. Archbishop Duhig himself officiated the event. He was deeply committed to expanding Catholic presence. St Benedict’s opening was on August 12, 1917. Duhig noted the hardship faced by parishioners walking to St Joseph’s on early Sunday mornings.

Designed by G.H.M. Addison, St Benedict’s embodies the Interwar Free Classical style. Addison also designed St Columba’s, Sacred Heart Church and the Church of the Little Flower. St Benedict’s design features face brickwork and flat buttresses. The front elevation showcases a stained-glass rose window.

Over time St Benedict’s has seen several changes. A primary school opened in 1929 run by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. A convent and presbytery were also added. In 1974 the church was painted and altered. A colonnade was added to the eastern side.

In 1980 St Benedict’s Parish was reamalgamated with St Joseph’s Parish at Kangaroo Point. This decision came due to a scarcity of priests. They needed to staff new parishes in Brisbane’s developing suburbs.

Today St Benedict’s stands as a Local Heritage Place. Its significance lies in its historical, aesthetic, social and historical associations. The church reminds us of the dedication of Father Breen. It also honors the vision of Archbishop Duhig. As you leave St Benedict’s consider the many stories held within its walls.
