Was it truly the first Black Catholic church north of the Mason-Dixon line? Stand here before Saint Benedict the Moor Church. This very spot holds a rich and often untold history. This wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a cornerstone of the African American community a beacon of hope and resilience.

Founded in 1883 it began as a mission parish. A testament to Father Thomas Farrell’s legacy. His $5000 bequest ensured a sacred space for Black Catholics in Lower Manhattan. This act of generosity stands as a powerful symbol of inclusion in a time when prejudice was rife. It was the first such church in New York City a groundbreaking achievement in the face of adversity.

Its initial location was at 210 Bleecker Street. But as the Black community shifted north so did Saint Benedict’s. In 1898 it found a new home at 342 West 53rd Street in Hell’s Kitchen. This Italianate-style red brick church designed by R C McLane & Sons. It became more than a place of prayer. It was a community center. It hosted lyceums intellectual gatherings that attracted prominent figures. Think Hubert Harrison John E Bruce Arturo Schomburg. It was indeed the intellectual center of the New York Negro.

Imagine the weight of history these walls hold. The echoes of prayers sung in voices that carry the spirit of struggle and hope. It witnessed the first stateside High Mass of Father Augustus Tolton. The first openly Black Catholic priest in the United States. Think about William Augustine Williams the first African-American Catholic seminarian. He served as the church’s sacristan. These men and countless others made Saint Benedict’s a unique and powerful presence in the city.

Sadly this landmark faced its own challenges. The changing demographics led to a decline in its congregation. The parish eventually became primarily Hispanic. It was deconsecrated in 2017. In 2023 it was sold to a developer. While its religious purpose ended its legacy endures. It remains a reminder of the resilience of faith in the face of hardship. It stands as a testament to the ongoing struggle for equality and a tribute to the Black Catholic community. This church remains a story waiting to be told and retold reminding us of the importance of preserving history and remembering those who forged a path toward a more inclusive future.
