“Constituted in 1971 from Raheny.” That simple sentence marks the beginning of Saint Benedict’s Church’s story. We stand before a place of worship that quickly became a vital part of the Grange Park community in Dublin.
Saint Benedict’s Church serves the spiritual needs of this vibrant Dublin suburb. It stands on Grange Park View, a welcoming beacon. The church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith.
Imagine Grange Park in the late 1960s. The new estate was developing rapidly. Monsignor Fitzpatrick from Raheny Parish saw the need for schools and a church to serve the growing population. Saint Benedict’s Church was born out of this vision.
Initially, Saint Benedict’s Church shared its name with the local school. St. Benedict’s school opened its doors in 1969. It began with just 80 children. The school quickly expanded along with the area. By 1973, there were 972 pupils enrolled.
To accommodate the growing number of students, St. Mary’s Junior School opened. St. Mary’s catered for the younger children. St. Benedict’s then focused on the older students. Both schools continued to grow. By 1978, each school had around 1,000 pupils. St. Mary’s became the largest junior school in Ireland at the time.
Saint Benedict’s Church itself became a focal point. It offered regular Mass services to the community. Today, you can attend Mass here every day. Services are held at 10:00 am from Monday to Friday. A Vigil Mass takes place on Saturday evenings. Sunday Mass is celebrated at 11:00 am.
Saint Benedict’s Church is an active parish. It also hosts special events. A Mass with the Padre Pio Group is held on the first Friday of each month. Keep an eye on the parish website for Holy Days and any schedule changes.
The parish is led by Very Rev Cyril Mangan. He is supported by a team of dedicated clergy. They include Very Rev Patrick Canon Boyle and Rev Tony Power. Rev Ronnie Dunne and Kirsten Mahon also contribute to the parish.
The church has adapted to changing demographics. The schools reflect this evolution. St. Mary’s moved into St. Benedict’s in 1995. In 2007, the schools officially merged. They became St. Benedict’s & St. Mary’s N.S.. This caters for all children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class.
Saint Benedict’s Church has touched countless lives. Many current pupils are children of former students. The church welcomes new families from all backgrounds. It is a place of continuity and community spirit.
