Saint Augustine of Hippo was ordained a priest in 391 by Valerian. Valerian was the Bishop of Hippo. In 395, Valerian appointed Augustine vicar bishop of Hippo. After Valerian died, Saint Augustine took his place.
During his 35 years as bishop, Saint Augustine combated heresies. He fought against the Donatists, Manichaeans and Pelagians. Saint Augustine wrote many works. His student Possidias said the number approached 1030. Saint Augustine wanted his writings to be intelligent and edifying. He said it was better for people to condemn grammar than not understand.
Saint Augustine wrote The City of God. He also wrote The Confessions. Other works include 17 Books against the Pelagians. He wrote Handbook of Christian Knowledge.
Saint Augustine died on August 28 in 430. The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Augustine on June 15. The West commemorates him on August 28. The Saint’s Holy Relics are in Italy. They are located in the Roman Catholic church of Saint Peter Ciel D’ Oro Pavia. Part of his relics are in Greece. They can be found in the Monastery of Saint Meletios of Oinoi Villion in Attica.
Saint Augustine believed in Christian love. He cared about meeting basic needs. He wanted to relieve suffering. These are the main ingredients of the Orthodox Community Outreach Center. It is a unique interOrthodox ministry of the whole Church, clergy and laity together. It was recently established in Denver’s inner city.
Clients of the Outreach Center are homeless. They are also single parents and the unemployed. The working poor seek help here. Volunteers greet them. They serve them. These volunteers are members of one of the nine Denver Orthodox churches. They belong to three jurisdictions Antiochian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, and Orthodox Church in America.
The Orthodox Community Outreach Center offers a unique witness. It shows Christ’s saving and healing power through faith. It also shows it through works that fulfill the Gospel imperative. It meets human need and relieves suffering. The Outreach Center is believed to be the first such interOrthodox sponsored social service facility in North America.
The volunteers and supporters perform vital tasks. They worship, teach and work in prayerful fellowship. They do it for the glory of God. The center is a haven of hospitality. It welcomes Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike. It is becoming a beacon of Christ’s love. It ministers to the unchurched in the inner city.
The Orthodox Community Outreach Center was founded on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. That was March 15, 1992. Since that time it has steadily grown. It now feeds and clothes upwards of 50 families a month. It has collected and given away hundreds of household items and furnishings. The Center’s goal is to support the development of spiritual life and growth.
