Saint Anthony’s Church holds a special place in New York City’s history. It was established in 1859. It was the first parish in the United States specifically created to serve the Italian immigrant community. Imagine the struggles these newcomers faced. They left their homeland for a new life. Many stopped practicing their Catholic faith. They lacked clergy who spoke their language.
The church’s journey wasn’t easy. It started as a small congregation. They worshipped in a leased space. A priest named Sanguinetti began this work. He soon returned to Italy disheartened by the obstacles. The Italian community persevered. They sought help from Franciscan friars. Friar Leo Pacilio a Neapolitan stepped up. He re-established the parish in 1866. They used a former Methodist church on Sullivan Street. Cardinal McCloskey dedicated the first church.
