St Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in New York City holds a special place in history. Initially located at 149 Sullivan Street the church was housed in a former Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1866 Franciscan Fathers re-established St Anthony of Padua Church. However the growing congregation needed a larger space. So between 1886 and 1888 the current church was constructed. Architect Arthur Crooks designed a stunning Italian Renaissance style building. Its 75-foot-wide and 150-foot-long structure is impressive. Its granite and limestone facade is a showstopper. The three entrances are crowned by a statue of St Anthony himself.
The interior is equally magnificent. Italian marble adorns the pulpit communion rail and altars. The main altar is a massive 17 feet wide and 26 feet tall. The high ceilings and stained glass windows bathe the space in warm light. The church originally seated 1500 people. It’s interesting to imagine those wooden settees filled with worshippers.
The story of St Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church doesn’t end there. The 1930s brought significant changes. Houston Street was widened for subway construction. This exposed the previously hidden north wall of the church. Today that space is used for an annual Nativity scene.
