Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

In the heart of Atlanta’s historic West End, stands Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. It’s a place where the echoes of faith and community resonate through time. Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church wasn’t simply built. It was envisioned, dreamt of, and brought to life by the unwavering spirit of a group of Catholic women led by Esther LaRose Harris. In 1902, in the hallowed halls of her home, The Wren’s Nest, these women recognized a need. They saw the challenge faced by West End families who lacked convenient access to Catholic services and education. From this seed of an idea grew the Catholic Ladies Aid Society. Their dedication and persuasion convinced church leaders to establish a church in the West End. The very first Mass at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church was a testament to the community’s faith. Fifty-five souls, representing twenty-four families, gathered on June 13, 1903, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Corley. The church’s official dedication followed on September 20, 1903. The growth of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church has been a constant throughout its history. Starting from a small gathering in a private home, the congregation quickly expanded. They soon outgrew their first church building, which straddled Gordon and Ashby Streets. This led to the construction of the present church building, dedicated in 1924. Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the dedication and perseverance of its community. From 1932 to 1962, the church published the Chronicles of Atlanta Catholicism: St. Anthony’s Catholic News. This publication served as a vital record of Catholic history in Atlanta. It stands as a reminder of the church’s significant role in the city’s religious landscape. Over the years, Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church has undergone several renovations. Each renovation has sought to preserve its historic character while adapting to the needs of a growing and evolving congregation. These renovations, including a major project completed in 2022, have brought modern amenities and technologies to the church, ensuring its continued service to the community. Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church remains a vibrant hub of faith, service, and community.
