Perhaps you’ve noticed the simple yet comforting architecture of Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church. This Catholic church stands on Ridgeway Road in Onchan on the Isle of Man. Saint Anthony serves as a place of worship for the local Catholic community.

Let’s step back in time to understand the roots of Catholicism on the Isle of Man. Following the English Reformation, the Manx church broke its ties with Rome. Catholic practices were forbidden. However, trade with Ireland and France kept a small Catholic community alive.

In the early 18th century, Catholic children were tolerated in schools. A small burial plot was established near St Michael’s chapel on Langness. Another plot appeared later within the ruined cathedral on St Patrick’s Isle. Despite religious tolerance, Catholics still had to follow ecclesiastical laws.

From 1779, Father Johnston visited the island. He noted about 29 Catholics lived here. In 1789, Father Louis sought asylum. He tutored the Governor’s and Bishop’s children. He offered Mass in barns or cottages.

The early 1800s saw an influx of Irish fleeing the 1798 rebellion. The Catholic population rose to around 200. The Fagans family brought their chaplain, Father Collins. He ministered to the Irish fishing community until his death in 1811.

Father Miles McPharlan was the first resident priest in Douglas. He fled to the Isle of Man around 1804 to escape debts. He built St Bridget’s chapel by 1814.

In 1823, the Irish Jesuit College sent Father Gahan. He opened St Mary’s in Castletown. John Kelly opened St Mary’s school in Douglas in 1824. It attracted both Protestants and Catholics.

By 1836, the Catholic community in Douglas bought a theatre. They converted St George’s Hall into St Francis Xavier church. The Irish famines of the 1840s increased the Catholic population. Tourists from the North of England further swelled numbers in summer.

Since the 1850s, the Island parishes have been attached to the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Today, Saint Anthony continues this legacy. It provides mass services and a community hub. You can attend mass here at various times throughout the week. Check the schedule for specific times. Saint Anthony stands as a testament to the enduring Catholic faith on the Isle of Man. Its history is intertwined with the broader story of religious change. It shows resilience and growth on this unique island.
