Picture this. A simple library table. It served as the very first altar of Saint Anselm Roman Catholic Church. This unassuming table witnessed the first Mass on June 4 1922. It’s a story you’ll only hear here. Right in front of Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm Roman Catholic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. Established in 1922 it’s a vital part of Bay Ridge’s history. The church’s humble beginnings began in the home of Mr and Mrs T F Fitzgerald. Over two hundred people attended that first Mass.

The initial services took place in a private home. Think of it. The intimate setting. The warmth of a home welcoming a burgeoning congregation. This wasn’t just a church starting up. It was a community forming. Bonds were being forged. It grew from those initial gatherings into the magnificent church we see today.

The first church building was remarkably modest. It was designed by Robert Reiley and built by parishioner William Flanagan. Eventually this small structure served as an auditorium for the school that was built later. It remains a testament to the community’s dedication.

The church experienced a period of significant expansion. A new convent was built in 1941. The rectory followed in 1942. The current church building finally opened its doors in 1954. World War II caused delays. The community’s perseverance shines through.

Saint Anselm’s isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s about the people. Dan Texeira a parishioner for over 50 years said it’s a place of refuge. It’s where he met friends who remain close decades later. This echoes throughout the church’s history. Saint Anselm’s fosters enduring relationships.

The church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2022. A Mass was held with music. A party followed in Meletia Hall. US Representative Nicole Malliotakis along with state Senator Andrew Gounardes and Council Member Justin Brannan sent proclamations. These acts of recognition highlight the church’s position in the community.

Saint Anselm Roman Catholic Church stands before you. It’s more than a place of worship. It’s a living record of faith community and perseverance. It’s a story waiting to be discovered. A story whispered from the very first Mass held on that small library table. A story alive within these walls.
