Gazing upon Saint Anne Melkite Greek Catholic Cathedral, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This magnificent structure, nestled in the heart of North Hollywood, Los Angeles, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to a vibrant community and a journey through time. Saint Anne Church, as it was originally known, traces its roots back to 1909. It was then that Father Gerasimos Sawaya, a pioneering Melkite missionary priest, embarked on a journey across the West Coast. His mission was to minister to the scattered Melkite communities. Saint Anne Church became a cornerstone for the burgeoning Melkite population in Los Angeles, serving as the mother church for numerous other communities across California and beyond. The original church, located on Hoover Street, eventually became too small for the growing congregation. The community rallied together and built a new church on Moorpark Street, completed in 1965. This modern cathedral, inspired by Byzantine architecture, stands as a beacon of faith. In a historic moment, on May 20, 2015, Pope Francis designated Saint Anne Church as the Co-Cathedral of the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton. This elevation solidified its importance not only within the local community, but across the entire United States. Saint Anne Melkite Greek Catholic Cathedral stands as a vibrant testament to faith, resilience, and community. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in America.
