Despite the social stigma and personal heartache, they remained steadfast in their faith. They continued to dedicate a third of their possessions to the poor and another third to their place of worship, keeping only a modest portion for themselves. Their unwavering devotion was finally rewarded with a divine promise. The Angel Gabriel appeared to both Anna and Joachim, separately, to announce the miraculous birth of a daughter, Mary. Mary, destined to become the Theotokos, the Mother of God, was a testament to their faith and patience. Saint Anna and Joachim fulfilled their vow, presenting the young Mary to the Temple at the age of three. They nurtured her spiritual growth, ensuring she was raised in a sacred environment. Their story echoes the biblical tale of Hannah, Samuel’s mother, who also faced barrenness before bearing a child dedicated to God’s service. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Saint Anna is revered with the title “Forbear of God”. Both the Birth of Mary and her dedication to the Temple are celebrated as two of the Twelve Great Feasts, highlighting their profound significance. While Saint Anna isn’t typically depicted in Nativity scenes, she’s often shown with the infant Jesus. Tradition sometimes places her at the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and even suggests she rejoined the Holy Family in Egypt. Today, Saint Anna is the patron saint of housewives, grandmothers, cabinet makers, unmarried women, women in labor, and miners. She embodies the virtues of patience, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
