Father Thomas W Wallace a man with two Ursuline nun sisters was appointed pastor. He chose a name honoring their foundress Saint Angela Merici patron saint of the Ursuline order. The first church a small wooden structure opened its doors in 1900. The rectory nestled between 162nd and 163rd Streets on Morris Avenue.

A parish school followed in 1907. It started in a small hall on Grant Avenue. For years Ursuline Sisters dedicated themselves to teaching the children of this growing community. Though plans for a new church on the corner of Morris Avenue never materialized the school’s auditorium became the lasting house of worship.

In January 2023 two priests from the Apostles of Jesus Missionary Congregation a group founded in Uganda fifty years earlier served the parish. The congregation has strong ties to Nigeria. The church celebrates masses in multiple languages including Spanish English and even Ibo a Nigerian dialect reflecting its diverse congregation. Mass times are numerous catering to the various needs of the community.
