Established in 1950 amidst celery and bean farms Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church stands as a testament to resilience. Originally serving Lutherans working in nearby aircraft manufacturing it quickly became a neighborhood cornerstone. Small bungalow houses sprouted around it. The church’s commitment to its community endured even an attic fire.
Saint Andrew’s is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community hub. It’s a place where people of all ages faiths backgrounds and orientations gather. They strive to support Mar Vista residents. In 2024 they chose to focus on immigrants and refugees. They’re actively involved in education and volunteer opportunities. They are mindful of the needs of their neighbors particularly regarding homelessness and safety.
This wasn’t always the case. Saint Andrew’s has evolved. It’s a proud member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It actively champions global justice and cooperation. In 2014 it officially became a Reconciling in Christ congregation. This affirmed its commitment to inclusion of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals and their loved ones.
The church’s dedication extends to environmental concerns. In 2020 it joined Lutherans Restoring Creation. This amplified its commitment to ecological justice. They’ve implemented solar panels and water-smart landscaping. They engage in beach and park clean-ups. They support climate justice initiatives. Every Sunday service begins with a land acknowledgement. This recognizes the unceded homeland of the Gabrielino Tongva Kizh and Chumash peoples.
At the heart of Saint Andrew’s is Pastor Caleb Crainer. An out-gay pastor he’s a leader in LGBTQIA2S+ inclusion. He brings a love of science interreligious collaboration and bold questions. He’s been serving the church since 2012. The talented Galina Barskaya directs the church’s music. She’s also on staff at Occidental College. She serves as Music Director at the Mesopotamian Opera Company and leads an independent opera company. Ashley Marquand manages the church’s office and facilities. She handles rentals events and general information.
Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church isn’t merely a place of worship. It’s a living example of faith community and dedication to its values. It’s a place that embraces change actively works to undo systems of oppression and strives to be a welcoming beacon in West Los Angeles.
