Did Alexis Dupont Parker ever imagine his memorial to his wife would become a vibrant hub of Denver’s spiritual life? Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, nestled in the heart of Denver, has a captivating tale to tell. This Gothic masterpiece, designed by the renowned Ralph Adams Cram, stands as a testament to both faith and architectural brilliance. Originally dedicated in 1909 as Trinity Memorial Church, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church later adopted its current name in 1917. The church’s story begins much earlier, however, with the humble Trinity Memorial Chapel. Established as a mission school by St. John’s Church Sunday School, the chapel held its cornerstone laying ceremony in 1874. Led by Bishop John Franklin Spalding, this act marked the construction of the second Episcopal church building in Denver. Parker, a magnate of the Colorado and Southern Railway, commissioned Cram to design this magnificent structure. Cram, a distinguished architect from Boston, brought his unique Gothic vision to Denver, creating a church that has stood the test of time. In 2008, Saint Andrew’s expanded, adhering to Cram’s original vision for a grander church. Now, the sanctuary seats 175 and showcases works by local Denver artists Marion Buchan and Albert Byron Olson. Adding to the architectural tapestry, the parish house was designed by Denver architect Jacques Benedict. Today, the red Harvard brick and limestone facade of Saint Andrew’s beckons visitors to step inside. Pointed Gothic arches dominate the interior, complemented by beamed ceilings and the warm glow of amber leaded-glass windows. A Sienese Madonna greets visitors at the door, while an 18th-century Portuguese Sorrowful Mother watches from the opposite side. Spanish Monastic stalls, carved by Franciscans a century ago, add to the rich history. Art adorns the space, from a santo hanging on the wall to an Edwardian reredos by Denver artist Albert Byron Olsen gracing the high altar. A Romanesque baptismal font stands near the entrance, a symbol of new beginnings. Saint Andrew’s has faced challenges and emerged stronger. In 1986, significant repairs breathed new life into the church. A fire in 1999 caused smoke damage and destroyed the organ, but the resilient congregation persevered. They worshipped at the nearby Temple Events Center while Saint Andrew’s was restored, complete with a new Buzard pipe organ. Saint Andrew’s is more than just a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant community, a place of worship, and a symbol of Denver’s enduring spirit.
