Established in 1956 Saint Andrew Lutheran Church quickly became a prominent fixture in Houston’s Spring Branch area. Its location proved advantageous. The church capitalized on the area’s burgeoning population. Initially a large congregation within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod it saw over 250 worshippers weekly. However like many churches in older suburbs Saint Andrew faced challenges. Over time attendance plateaued and began to decline. Despite having excellent pastors dedicated staff and generous members the church struggled to maintain its numbers. Many young families moved to newer suburbs further west.
But Saint Andrew didn’t give up. Instead of closing or moving the congregation chose a path of renewal. They chose to reach out to the evolving community. Today Saint Andrew thrives. It’s home to three distinct ministries English Korean and Spanish. On any given weekend around 300 people worship there. Another 80 to 100 people mainly non-members attend weekly Family Nights. The church also boasts a thriving preschool program. This remarkable transformation wasn’t accidental. It resulted from a conscious decision to adapt to the changing demographics of Spring Branch.
