Did Peter Esper ever imagine his humble farmhouse would become a cornerstone of faith for generations? Here at Saint Alphonsus Church, that very transformation unfolded. Saint Alphonsus Church stands as a testament to the German immigrant community’s devotion. In the 1840s, families from Germany, seeking new beginnings in America, settled in what was then Springwells, now east Dearborn. They yearned for a place to worship, a spiritual anchor in their new lives. Initially, they trekked to Old St. Mary’s in downtown Detroit for Sunday Mass. Eventually, a Redemptorist priest began visiting, holding Mass in the Esper farmhouse. As the congregation grew, the Espers generously donated four acres of their land in 1852. This act of generosity marked the official birth of Saint Alphonsus Parish. A modest church replaced the farmhouse services, becoming the first dedicated structure for the budding community. The parish thrived, necessitating a larger church in 1874. A cemetery was established next to the church, later relocated a block north due to road construction. This cemetery became the final resting place for about 300 souls, including Henry Ford’s maternal grandfather. It’s said that Ford visited the grave on the very day he passed away. The rapid growth of the auto industry transformed Dearborn from farmland to a bustling city. Saint Alphonsus Church continued to serve its community, constructing a new school in 1922 and expanding it in 1926. The 1874 church, once again, became too small. Services temporarily moved to the school auditorium as plans for the current Neo-Gothic structure took shape. In 1928, construction began on the magnificent church we see today, formally dedicated in 1930. This sanctuary, with its Pewabic tile floors and paintings by Detroit artist Alfred Wrobbel, seats 1,200. The high altar, reaching 38 feet, is a masterpiece of Roman stone and Italian marble. The vibrant stained-glass windows, installed between 1931 and the post-World War II era, depict scenes from the Rosary, patron saints, and intricate decorative patterns. They illuminate the church with colorful light, creating a space of reverence and awe. Saint Alphonsus Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the unwavering faith and enduring spirit of a community, passed down through generations.
