“Ever heard of an island parish?” That’s how St. Aloysius was once known. Picture this Los Angeles church surrounded on three sides by the city itself. Huntington Park formed the fourth side. This unique location gave its parishioners the quirky nickname “islanders.”
St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church has a rich history. Bishop Thomas Conaty founded the parish in November 1908. Father P.J. McGrath celebrated the first Masses. These took place in a simple bungalow on Crockett Boulevard.
Soon after its establishment, a small church was built. It was then remodeled in 1922 giving the church a fresh new face. In 1921 a new school building opened. The Sisters of Mercy staffed the school for over fifty years. They dedicated themselves to the education of the children.
Father William O’Regan oversaw the construction of a new school. This newer school had nine classrooms and an auditorium. It served as a temporary church. In 1951, the parish center was completed. This combined the church, school, and meeting facilities into one location.
The story of St. Aloysius is intertwined with dedicated individuals. Consider Msgr. Daniel Hurley from County Cork. He led St. Aloysius from 1932 to 1939. He had previously served at Nativity in Torrance. Father William O’Regan from County Limerick planned a modern church. Sadly, he passed away before seeing his vision realized. Bishop Joseph McGucken remembered him as a humble and kindly priest.
Father John Stapleton’s leadership saw Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Manning bless the new church-school in 1951. Father Jose Bellavista, born in Spain, became pastor in 1973. He had a dramatic escape from the Spanish Civil War.
Today, St. Aloysius continues its mission. Father Pedro Esteban from Spain currently leads the parish. He follows in the footsteps of those who came before.
The parish has grown significantly over the years. Currently, St. Aloysius has over 1,473 active parishioners. Over 7,000 individuals attend Sunday services. Generous donations have allowed for recent remodeling. This includes redesigning the altar area and installing new flooring. A new bell tower has also been added. In 2011, the Archdiocese supported the parish. It repaved the parking lot and repaired the roof. New basketball poles and hoops were added to the school. A generous foundation grant funded a complete renovation of the school interior.
St. Aloysius School remains a vital part of the community. It educates children in a safe and positive environment. The school focuses on Catholic faith. They also help the students acquire academic and social skills. Over 400 students attend religious education classes.
St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith, community, and service. From its humble beginnings in a bungalow to its current vibrant state, it remains an important spiritual center in Los Angeles.
