Picture Saint Alexander’s legacy in Athens. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place steeped in history a testament to faith during turbulent times. Saint Alexander himself lived during the reign of Constantine the Great a pivotal era for Christianity.
He wasn’t just a local priest. He was a key figure at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD. This council formally defined Christian beliefs condemning the Arian heresy. Imagine the weight of those decisions the fervent debates. Alexander stood firm against Arius a prominent heretic who denied Christ’s divinity. Alexander’s role was crucial. He represented the aging Archbishop Mitrofanis. The old archbishop recognised Alexander’s worth appointing him as his successor.
Alexander didn’t just attend the council. He spread the Orthodox faith. He travelled extensively throughout Greece Thrace Macedonia and Thessaly. He taught and solidified the newly defined doctrines. He wasn’t afraid to challenge power. Constantine’s son also called Constantine favoured Arianism. This created conflict between church and state. Alexander refused to compromise his beliefs. He stood against political pressure. He refused to celebrate the Holy Communion with Arius. This was a bold act of defiance. The criterion of the Liturgy and Holy Communion was paramount.
Even Arius’s ultimate fate is linked to Saint Alexander. Arius had deceitfully claimed to believe correctly. Emperor Constantine was about to accept him back. Saint Alexander however prayed all night for God’s intervention. The next morning Arius was found dead. Divine judgement had intervened.
Alexander’s life was one of steadfast faith. He defended Orthodoxy throughout his life. He upheld the decisions of the council. He upheld the legacy of the apostles. He was a true defender of the faith. Saint Alexander peacefully departed this life in 337 AD. His legacy remains alive in this church a silent testament to the strength of belief. He left the Church an icon of a true saint a defender of Orthodoxy. A guardian of apostolic traditions.
