“This isn’t your typical Catholic church,” someone whispered as we approached the unassuming building. Right in front of us stood Saint Albans Old Catholic Church, tucked away on Harrisburg Boulevard. Now, you might be thinking, “Another Catholic church?” But Saint Albans holds a unique story, quite different from its Roman Catholic counterparts. Saint Albans Old Catholic Church belongs to the American Old Catholic Church, a denomination with roots that stretch back to the Old Catholic movement in Europe. See, in the 19th century, some Catholic groups split from the Roman Catholic Church, seeking reforms and greater autonomy. These churches, while holding onto many Catholic traditions, embraced a more progressive approach. They are independent of the Vatican and hold a strong belief in inclusivity. One of their core tenets is that all baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive communion. This open-door policy makes Saint Albans a true testament to unity within the Christian faith.
