From a former expanse of untouched heathland Sahlkamp rose. Sahlkamp a district in Hanover’s Bothfeld-Vahrenheide. Its story begins not with grand castles or ancient churches but with humble beginnings. Initially a flat uninhabited area. It lay north of Hanover. In the mid-19th century parts were allocated to Bothfeld and Klein-Buchholz farmers. The military also used the land for training. First as a drill ground later as a training area.
The Reichswehr even established an airfield. After World War I this became Hanover-Vahrenwald Airport. Around 1910 a Zeppelin station was built. It housed about ten military airships. This was near today’s Leipziger and Dresdener streets in neighboring Vahrenheide. The Zeppelin hangars were dismantled in 1917. Their stones were recycled. They were used for the construction of the List e V allotment garden colony. The Zeppelin colony demolished in the late 1960s served as a reminder for years.
From the 1920s onwards allotment gardens sprung up. This was along the Mittelland Canal and in the Holzwiesen area. The first houses appeared in what is now known as the Märchenviertel the Fairytale Quarter. In the 1950s and 60s single-family homes were added. Some allotment gardens were demolished. The Zeppelin and Heidegrün colonies were replaced by single and terraced houses. Sahlkamp officially became a district in the early 1960s. It borders Isernhagen-Süd List Bothfeld and Vahrenheide.
High-rise buildings were erected from the 1970s onwards. They line the Hähnewiesen and Ada-Lessing-Straße. Until August 31 2021 this was also known as General-Wever-Straße. A high number of social housing units south of Kugelfangtrift created a social hotspot. In late 2022 14363 people lived in Sahlkamp. 7314 women and 7049 men.
The military use of the Freiherr-von-Fritsch barracks on General-Wever-Straße ended in mid-2001. The site was redeveloped in 2020. Construction of the Gartenstadt-Nord residential area began in 2021. A supermarket office spaces and possibly small businesses will be built on General-Wever-Straße. The rest of the area will feature detached terraced and semi-detached houses as well as multi-story buildings. A total of 775 housing units are planned. Sahlkamp boasts excellent transport links with the U-Bahn line 2 providing easy access. The Bahnstrift stop is centrally located. The Kugelfangtrift Segelfluggelände landscape protection area sits to the north. It extends to the A2 motorway. The area is a testament to Sahlkamp’s transformation. It demonstrates its rich past. It also foreshadows its vibrant future. This is Sahlkamp a district with a story for all to explore.
