Step inside the Sahara West Library and Fine Arts Museum. Feel the cool air on your skin a welcome change from the Las Vegas heat. This isn’t just any library. It’s a place where history and art intertwine. This building has witnessed a rich past.

The Sahara West Library and Fine Arts Museum wasn’t always a combined space. The Las Vegas Art Museum existed separately for decades. It was Nevada’s first fine arts museum. It began humbly as the Las Vegas Art League in 1950. The League’s vision was to bring art to the city. They started in a ranch house.

In the mid-1990s the City of Las Vegas needed the Art League’s space. They offered a new home the Sahara West Library. A temporary space housed the museum until 1997 when the new building opened. This marked the beginning of the combined Sahara West Library and Fine Arts Museum we see today.

The museum wasn’t just a collection of paintings and sculptures. It hosted a variety of exhibitions. From renowned artists like Dale Chihuly and Marc Chagall to Auguste Rodin. For a time it was even affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. This partnership boosted the museum’s prestige and helped it attract world-class exhibitions.

Under the leadership of Dr Libby Lumpkin the museum focused on contemporary art and design. It showcased artists from Southern California such as Robert Irwin Larry Bell and James Turrell. Local Las Vegas artists also had their moment to shine. The 702 Series featured solo exhibitions by artists born raised or working in Las Vegas.

Sadly the Las Vegas Art Museum closed in 2009 due to decreasing donations. The collection moved to the Barrick Museum at UNLV. But the Sahara West Library continued its role as a cultural hub. The former museum space now functions as art galleries within the library.

This building is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to artistic perseverance. It is a place where stories are told. Stories of art history and community spirit. It is a place of creativity and cultural preservation. Take some time to wander through the galleries. Let the art and the atmosphere inspire you. This unique Las Vegas location continues to serve the community and share its artistic heritage.
