Sagrado Corazón Statue

Have you ever felt the gaze of a giant? Here in San Sebastián de La Gomera, the Sagrado Corazón statue, also known as Cristo de San Sebastián, watches over us all. This imposing statue of Christ, arms outstretched, not wide like the Christ the Redeemer statue, but slightly bent, blessing the town and bay, has been a silent guardian of this island since 1964. The Sagrado Corazón statue isn’t just a religious symbol. It is a landmark, a meeting point, and a testament to the island’s history. The statue stands atop a 13-meter base, reaching a total height of 18 meters. This elevated position, high on the slopes of Machal ravine, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. From here, you can see the neighboring island of Tenerife, with the majestic Mount Teide piercing the sky. The Sagrado Corazón statue is a relatively recent addition to the La Gomera skyline. The first stone was laid in 1962, and just two years later, the statue was blessed by Bishop Luis Franco Cascón. Interestingly, the sculptor who brought this vision to life was José Larrea Echániz from Bilbao. While the statue has stood for decades, a new sculpture was placed in the mirador in 2016. The original image of the Sagrado Corazón was removed during renovations of the mirador. Although restoration was considered, it proved impossible. Now, a newly illuminated Cristo stands watch over the bay. The Sagrado Corazón statue is more than just a statue.
