Have you noticed the twin towers flanking the entrance of Sagrado Coracao de Jesus? This Catholic parish church stands as a beacon of faith in Becora Dili. Let me tell you its story.
The Sagrado Coracao de Jesus parish was established in 1965. It became the third parish in Dili. For years the community gathered in an older building. But the congregation dreamed of a more fitting house of worship.
Construction on the new Sagrado Coracao de Jesus began in 2013. It was a significant undertaking costing US$2.1 million. After eight years of effort the new church was consecrated on November 21 2021. Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva led the dedication.
Above the entrance to Sagrado Coracao de Jesus a statue of Jesus watches over all who enter. The church stands on the south side of Avenida de Becora. You will find it in the northwest of Aldeia Becusi Centro. Across the street in Aldeia Maucocomate is the parish hall. It is a hub of community activity.
Sagrado Coracao de Jesus is more than just a building. It is a center for faith and community. Close by is the Escola Secundaria Catolica do Sagrado Coracao de Jesus a Catholic high school. This school was founded in 1986 by Padre José Nolasco Santimago Menezes Monteiro.
Initially the school buildings were very simple. They were made with woven palm leaves and rope. But the school grew. It now aims to nurture students intellectually and spiritually. The school’s vision is to be salt and light to the world. Its mission is to cultivate Catholic faith and intellectual potential.
The school has faced challenges. Students come from all over Timor-Leste. They bring diverse backgrounds and characters. Despite these challenges the school maintains its principles. It reinforces learning with extra activities. These include English Portuguese computing and sports.
Each year the number of students increases. This is partly due to the school’s active approach. The school also emphasizes teacher development. They share experiences to inspire each other.
Many graduates have gone on to contribute to the nation’s development. Some have become teachers. Others work in government ministries. Some have joined the police or the military.
Sagrado Coracao de Jesus and the neighboring school play vital roles in Becora. They provide spiritual guidance education and a sense of community. They stand as symbols of faith learning and progress in Timor-Leste. As you stand here consider the generations who have passed through its doors. Think about the countless prayers offered within its walls. Appreciate the spirit of this place. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
