A 170-foot tall cross dominates the skyline. This is Sagemont Presbyterian Church. Its story began not here but in the minds of those at First Baptist Church in Pasadena. In 1966 they saw the need for a church in the developing Sagemont area of Houston. They bought 5.46 acres and built a chapel. The total cost was a modest $160,000.
Sagemont Baptist Chapel soon found its pastor John D. Morgan. He left a church in Sulphur Springs. The Lord had other plans for him. The church exploded with growth. Hundreds found faith. Missions and evangelism became central to its identity. Over 300 people from Sagemont went into full-time ministry.
Debt became a challenge. It reached $600,000. Then something extraordinary happened. In the mid-1970s Pastor Morgan felt God’s call. They had to become debt-free. They trusted in God’s provision. They would not borrow. They stopped passing offering plates and signing pledge cards.
Miracles followed. The debt vanished in 14 months. Three hundred families gave their entire income for 40 days. Over $1,000,000 poured in. A new auditorium was built. Another $1,500,000 materialized to complete it. Their faith inspired others. Sagemont helped hundreds of churches avoid bankruptcy. This ministry continues.
As Sagemont grew to nearly 16,000 members land became scarce. They needed more space. The Lord provided. They acquired theaters a grocery store and a drugstore. Twenty-five acres were bought for $1,060,000 cash in just 13 weeks. Another 25 acres were gifted. It was a gift from the estate of Mr. Harry Holmes. His wife Carolyn believed in God’s work.
A $12,500,000 Children’s Building was built. It was paid for entirely in cash. Then came the Living Proof Project. A $30 million worship center and adult education building opened in 2012. It was another testament to their faith. But it’s not about buildings. It’s about changing lives through Christ.
The 170-foot cross stands as a symbol of their faith. It was inspired by Pastor Morgan’s vision in 2007. It was erected in 2009. It’s a beacon for those who seek faith and hope. It’s a powerful reminder of Sagemont’s unwavering commitment to Christ. The cross stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of Sagemont Presbyterian Church a beacon in Houston.
