Once a clay pit, now a serene lake. What secrets does Safirsøen hold? Safirsøen, or Sapphire Lake, beckons with its tranquil waters and peaceful surroundings. This isn’t just any lake. Safirsøen has a fascinating past.

Back in the late 1960s, specifically from 1968 to 1975, this site was a clay pit. The Hasle Klinker- and Chamottestensfabrik hoped to find clay of sufficient quality here. They wanted to use it in their production of bricks and other ceramic products. Sadly, their search was unsuccessful. The clay wasn’t suitable. The excavation was stopped. Nature then took over. Rainwater gradually filled the pit. Safirsøen, the Sapphire Lake, was born.

Because the excavation wasn’t extensive, Safirsøen is not a very deep lake. This makes it quite safe and accessible for visitors of all ages. Today, Safirsøen is a popular spot for families. It is especially ideal for freshwater fishing.

While the fish in Safirsøen might not be as large as those in Smaragdsøen, the Emerald Lake, there are plenty of them. Anglers will be pleased to know that no fishing license is required here. This makes it an easy and affordable activity for everyone.

Beyond its fishing appeal, Safirsøen is also a haven for local wildlife. The lake is home to a significant population of Marsh Frogs. These frogs are characteristic of Bornholm. You might also spot toads around the water’s edge.

Located in Sorthat, south of Hasle, Safirsøen is easily accessible. Havvej leads you directly to this natural gem. Safirsøen is a testament to nature’s ability to transform industrial sites into beautiful landscapes. So, take a moment to appreciate the serene beauty of Safirsøen. Remember its past as a clay pit. Enjoy the present as a thriving ecosystem and recreational area.
