Was this church always so modern? We’re standing before the Sacro Cuore, a church with a design that might surprise you. While its origins date back to the late 19th century, don’t let its initial construction date fool you. The Sacro Cuore underwent a dramatic transformation between 1956 and 1962. This revamp, led by architect Lando Bartoli, gave the church its distinctly modern look. One of the most striking features of the Sacro Cuore is its incredibly modern bell tower. This architectural marvel was actually a collaborative effort. Bartoli enlisted the expertise of the renowned engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, known for his innovative use of reinforced concrete. Nervi’s influence is clear in the bell tower’s unique and eye-catching design. But the Sacro Cuore isn’t just about modern architecture. Step inside, and you’ll find a treasure trove of art and history. You’ll see a beautiful stained glass window depicting the Resurrection by Marcello Avelani. Look for the bronze doors and ceramic saints, the work of Angelo Biancini. Your gaze will be drawn to a mosaic Stations of the Cross by János Hajnal. You’ll also find a moving crucifix sculpted by Umberto Bartoli. History buffs will appreciate the 16th-century Madonna and Child, a piece that whispers tales of a bygone era. Of course, no visit to the Sacro Cuore is complete without admiring the artistic representations of its namesake. A noteworthy piece is the “Last Supper” by Giovanni Stradano, a powerful depiction of a pivotal moment. And finally, see the painting by Antonio Ciseri, “Apparition of the Sacred Heart.” This work beautifully captures the essence of faith and devotion that the Sacro Cuore represents.
