A basilica of red sandstone rises before us. This is the Sacred Heart Church. Founded in 1873, it has a rich history. Originally, the parish had a temporary wooden church. The present Sacred Heart Church was built between 1909 and 1910.

The Sacred Heart Church’s architect was Charles Ménart. He also designed St Aloysius’ Church in Garnethill. The Presbytery, built in 1890, was designed by Pugin and Pugin. Later alterations from 1953 to 1954 were done by Gillespie, Kidd and Coia. These included fresco restoration by William Crosbie.

The Sacred Heart Church’s style is Baroque Revival. It features predominantly rock-faced red ashlar. Look at the east facade. Notice the large Diocletian window. It sits between giant Ionic pilasters. These support a pedimented gable. Flanking stair towers add to the impressive design. Giant thermal windows grace the side elevations.

Step inside the Sacred Heart Church. The interior is sumptuous. Marble features prominently. The internal concrete vault is brilliantly lit. Light streams in from a Venetian-windowed clerestory. The church once featured a Charles Baillie fresco. It was restored in 1954 by William Crosbie. Over the altar, observe the figure of Christ. Jack Mortimer created it in 1954. The Stations of the Cross were also done by William Crosbie in 1954.

Brother Walfrid has a special connection to this parish. He was the first headmaster of the Sacred Heart School. Born Andrew Kerins in County Sligo, Ireland, he joined the Marist order. In 1870, he moved to Scotland. Here in Glasgow’s East End, he founded Celtic Football Club. It was a way to raise funds and help feed the poor in this area. Notably, the poor children’s dinner tables in Savoy Street benefited greatly.

The Sacred Heart Church is more than just a building. It is a Category A listed building. This designation underscores its historical and architectural importance. Alterations were made to the ceiling in 1953 by Jack Coia.

Today, the Sacred Heart Church continues to serve its parish. It is a vital part of the Bridgeton community. The parish boundaries cover Bridgeton and Dalmarnock. You will find it on Old Dalmarnock Road. Sunday Mass is held at 9:30 am.

Many clergy members have served here over the years. Rev. Edward Noonan was here from 1872 to 1886. Very Rev. Peter Dowling SSS is the current priest. He began his service in 2024. The Sacred Heart Church stands as a testament to faith, community, and architectural beauty. Its red sandstone exterior and rich interior tell a story of devotion and service.
