The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church stands proudly in Pennsport a testament to the unwavering faith of Irish immigrants who found solace and strength within these walls. They arrived in the late 1800s fleeing the Great Famine their hearts heavy but their spirits unbroken. They built this church literally from the ground up. They dug the cellar themselves a testament to their dedication and their deep longing for a place of worship.
The story begins in 1871. Bishop James F Wood gave his blessing for a new parish. A temporary chapel was built quickly a modest structure yet a beacon of hope for the burgeoning community. It seated 500 people and within weeks it was filled to capacity for services. By 1874 the roof was on and the stonework complete. The materials were carefully selected granite for the foundation serpentine for the walls and Ohio limestone for the decorative elements. When completed in 1876 it was hailed as one of the most beautiful Gothic structures in the diocese. The dedication ceremony in 1877 was a grand affair attended by numerous priests.
