Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat believed in the power of education. She founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 19th-century France. Now, let’s step in front of the Convent of the Sacred Heart.

The Convent of the Sacred Heart stands as one of New York City’s oldest private schools for girls. Established in 1881 by the Society of the Sacred Heart, this institution has a rich history. It is deeply rooted in Catholic education. The Convent of the Sacred Heart is located on the Upper East Side. It occupies two historic mansions. These are the former Otto H. Kahn House and the James A. Burden House. Both are New York City Designated Landmarks. They are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Initially, the school was in a brownstone on Madison Avenue. By the 1930s, the school needed more space. It then moved to the Otto H. Kahn House. In 1940, the Society acquired the James A. Burden House.

The Convent of the Sacred Heart is part of a global network. This network includes over 150 schools. They are all committed to Sacred Heart education. The school is also accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools.

The school buildings have seen changes. Archstone Builders renovated classrooms and creative spaces. They added new windows and updated plumbing. The school also focuses on health and wellness. A wellness room for nursing mothers was created.

The largest mansion at 1 East 91st Street belonged to Otto Kahn. Kahn was an investment banker and arts patron. His 80-room mansion was modeled after the Cancelleria in Rome. Kahn’s wife sold the house to the Convent of the Sacred Heart after his death. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee designated the house as a landmark in 1970.

The James A. Burden House is at 7 East 91st Street. It now houses the Lower School of the Convent of the Sacred Heart. The Landmarks Preservation Commission called the Burden mansion as having “the finest Beaux Art townhouse rooms in the City.”

Many notable women have attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart. Lady Gaga, Caroline Kennedy, and Jordana Brewster are among its alumnae. The school has also appeared in films and TV shows. These include “Gossip Girl” and “Scrubs”.

The Convent of the Sacred Heart continues to evolve. It gears itself toward the future. It preserves its rich legacy. The school fosters a space inspired by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s mission. This mission is about educational equality and excellence.
