Right here stands Sacred Heart College. Its story began in 1889. Three Marist Brothers arrived by ox-wagon from Cape Town. They sought to establish a school. It all started in Koch Street. The school was initially named Sacred Heart School. It was exclusively for boys.
Johannesburg transformed. It grew from a mining town into a bustling city. The need for good education increased. The Koch Street building became too small. In 1924, part of the school moved to the outskirts. It then became known as Marist Brothers Observatory.
Sacred Heart College defied apartheid laws. The school welcomed boys of all nationalities and races. Chinese students joined in 1933. In 1977, students of color enrolled. This promoted inclusivity. It broke down racial barriers. This was at a time when segregation was the law.
A significant change occurred in 1980. The school became co-educational. Two girls’ schools joined Marist Observatory. They were Holy Family Convent and St Angela’s Ursuline School. The name changed back to Sacred Heart College.
Further changes took place on campus. The Pre-Primary and Junior Primary Schools moved from Yeoville. They joined the Observatory campus in stages. An Intermediate phase building was built in 1989. A modern Pre-Primary School opened in 1995.
