Ever wondered about the secrets held within these red brick walls? This is the Sackville Street Building. Right here in the heart of Manchester it stands a testament to the city’s rich industrial past and its ongoing commitment to scientific advancement.

The Sackville Street Building wasn’t always a university building. It began its life in 1895 as the Manchester School of Technology. Built on the site of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s engineering works it was a bold undertaking. Imagine the scale of that project a grand French Renaissance style structure rising from the ground.

Its construction employed the finest Edwardian brickwork and Burmantofts terracotta a testament to the era’s craftsmanship. Architect Spalding & Cross designed this magnificent building. The then Prime Minister Arthur Balfour officially opened it in 1902. He famously declared it the greatest municipal enterprise of its kind in the country.

The Sackville Street Building’s story didn’t end there. Extensions were added between 1927 and 1957 by Bradshaw Gass & Hope architects. The Great Depression and World War II significantly slowed this expansion. Interestingly the original plans included a swimming pool on the top floor. Structural concerns about the weight of the water led to a change of plans. It became a gymnasium then later an examination hall.

The Sackville Street Building has seen a lot. During World War II a bomb crashed through the chemistry lab. Incredibly the sturdy construction ensured the building survived with minimal damage. Students and staff even played a vital role during the war. They developed new technologies within its walls to aid the war effort.

Today the Sackville Street Building continues to thrive. It houses the University of Manchester’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and also provides space for textile and nuclear sciences. The historic Godlee Observatory still sits on the roof. It’s a reminder of the building’s long and fascinating history. From its humble beginnings as a technical school to its current status as a hub for cutting-edge research the Sackville Street Building stands as a symbol of Manchester’s enduring spirit of innovation. Its history is inscribed at the Grand Entrance and the Whitworth Street entrance recording key moments. The building has even been featured in various films and television shows. A true Manchester landmark.
