Hidden within the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh City, Sắc Tứ Thiên Tôn Tự stands as a beacon of tranquility. This Buddhist temple, also known as Sắc Tứ Tịnh Quang Tự, has a rich history intertwined with the Nguyễn Dynasty and the spiritual life of the region. The original name, Tịnh Nghiệp, reflects the temple’s serene beginnings in 1739 under the reign of Emperor Lê Ý Tông. Legend says that during a visit to the south, Emperor Nguyễn Phúc Khoát was so moved by the temple’s peaceful atmosphere and the devotion of the local people that he bestowed upon it a new name. He gifted a plaque inscribed with “Sắc Tứ Tịnh Quang Tự”.
Sắc Tứ Thiên Tôn Tự has witnessed centuries of change. It has undergone numerous renovations, the most extensive in 1997, yet it retains its traditional Vietnamese architectural style. The temple features a two-story entrance gate, intricate carvings, and a spacious courtyard filled with lush greenery. The main hall houses an impressive 2700 kg bronze statue of Thích Ca Buddha. There’s also a large drum made of buffalo hide, further enriching the temple’s spiritual ambiance.
The temple is not merely a place of worship. It serves as a cultural center for the community, hosting various events. One notable event is the annual Tổ festival, held on the 18th day of the second lunar month. During this festival, Buddhists gather to pay homage to their ancestors. Sắc Tứ Thiên Tôn Tự has also participated in larger Buddhist events. These include the United Nations’ Vesak celebrations.
