Amidst the gentle hum of machinery, a story unfolds at the Saalachkraftwerk. The Saalachkraftwerk stands as a testament to time and innovation. It has quietly powered progress for over a century. This hydroelectric power plant, nestled in the heart of Bad Reichenhall, Germany, has a rich history intertwined with the development of the region. The Saalachkraftwerk first came online in 1914. It was built to electrify the railway lines between Freilassing, Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgaden, and Salzburg. The plant was a marvel of engineering. Its construction involved diverting the Saalach River to create the nearby Saalachsee, a reservoir that would feed the turbines. This bold move, however, had unforeseen consequences. The diversion caused numerous mills, forges, and sawmills in Bad Reichenhall to fall silent. The city’s own power plants had to be abandoned. To compensate, a contract was negotiated with the railway. This ensured that a portion of the generated power would be fed into the city’s grid. This agreement explains why the Saalachkraftwerk generates both 16.7 Hz railway power and 50 Hz grid power. The Saalachkraftwerk harnesses the power of water through an ingenious system. Water from the Saalachsee travels through a 576-meter-long pressure tunnel. It then reaches a surge tank above the powerhouse. From there, five penstocks, each 2.6 meters in diameter, channel the water onto the turbines below. After turning the turbines, the water flows through a 620-meter-long tailrace canal back into the Saalach River. The Saalachkraftwerk’s story is not without its dramatic moments. In 1974, heavy rains caused a massive flood. The Saalachsee overflowed. The floodgates, submerged by the rising waters, could not be opened. A large mass of debris, carried by the flood, jammed the main sluice gate. The gate was lifted out of its guides. This caused the entire lake to drain. The repairs took months. The Saalachkraftwerk also has a unique role in environmental preservation. In 2005, a residual flow power plant was added to the complex. This ensures a minimum flow of water back into the original riverbed. This helps maintain the ecological balance and preserves the natural beauty of the area. Even today, the Saalachkraftwerk stands as a vital energy source for the region. It continues to supply both railway power and electricity to the city of Bad Reichenhall. The Saalachkraftwerk serves as a striking example of sustainable energy production. Its elegant Art Nouveau facade hides a complex network of machinery.
