What secrets does an island hold when its very name whispers of rabbits? Sa Conillera, off the coast of Ibiza, is known as “Rabbit Island”. But don’t let the cuddly name fool you. Sa Conillera holds tales far more dramatic than a simple bunny burrow. Sa Conillera is a small island, a mere 100 hectares, stretching north to south for about two kilometers. A lighthouse, built in 1857, stands sentinel at its northwest end, its whitewashed tower a beacon against the deep blue. The island is a nature reserve, part of a protected area that includes Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell, and the islets of Ponent. This protected status means that Sa Conillera isn’t easy to visit, requiring special permission. But imagine you’re one of the lucky few who get to set foot on its shores. You might find yourself walking through arid, rocky landscapes, dotted with rosemary, thyme, and the wind-battered shrubs of juniper and stunted pines. The air vibrates with the chirping of a unique cicada, a sound peculiar to this island. Keep an eye out for the Ibizan wall lizard, a subspecies found only here and on a few neighboring islets. Sa Conillera’s history stretches back centuries. Legend claims it as the birthplace of Hannibal, the Carthaginian general. The story goes that Hannibal’s father, Hamilcar Barca, sought shelter from a storm in a cave on the island’s south side. There, amidst the crashing waves, Hannibal was born. This cave is still known as sa Casa d’Annibal. Centuries later, Sa Conillera became a pirate’s haunt. Excavations unearthed skeletons from the 16th century, bearing the marks of violence and torture, likely the remains of pirates executed on the island. So, while rabbits might lend their name to Sa Conillera, the island’s true story is one of shipwrecks, endemic species, and whispers of ancient generals and pirate executions. It’s a place where legend and history intertwine, creating an allure that goes far beyond its humble name.
