The S-GW building stands before you a testament to Essen’s vibrant history. Its walls whisper tales of innovation and athletic achievement.

This unassuming structure houses paluno the Ruhr Institute for Software Technology. It is part of the University of Duisburg-Essen. It’s a far cry from the soccer fields but its location holds significance. The S-GW stands near the former grounds of SGS Essen a renowned women’s football club. For years the SGS Essen women’s team called Essen home. They played their games at various locations. One was the Sportpark Am Hallo. They also trained at the Helmut-Rahn-Sportanlage. Later their home games moved to a newly built stadium. The Stadion an der Hafenstrasse in Essen-Bergeborbeck.

The SGS Essen’s story is one of incredible dedication. It began in 1973 with the founding of a women’s football section at SC Grün-Weiß Schönebeck. After years in lower leagues they climbed to the top. They finally achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004. This was a huge step for women’s football in Germany.

The club’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. They faced financial difficulties. They had many injuries. They fought hard to stay in the Bundesliga. Through it all they persevered. They consistently achieved mid-table results. Their best result was a fourth-place finish in the 2018-19 season.

The SGS Essen also reached the German Cup semi-finals twice. In 2007 and again in 2010. Their greatest triumph came in reaching the women’s cup finals. Twice. Once in the 2013-14 DFB-Pokal and again in the 2019-20 DFB-Pokal.

While SGS Essen may no longer play near the S-GW their legacy lives on. The building stands as a symbol of the city’s commitment to education and technology. But it also serves as a subtle reminder of the incredible achievements of the SGS Essen women’s football team. Their dedication and perseverance inspired a city. Their story is a crucial part of Essen’s rich tapestry. A story of female athletic excellence. A story written on the fields not far from this very spot. The S-GW stands here a silent witness to their amazing journey. A journey that continues to inspire new generations.
