The Ryu-hon-ji Temple sits here in Kyoto, a testament to the resilience of Nichiren Buddhism. Its history is one of trials and tribulations, but also one of constant rebirth. Founded in 1341 as Myoken-ji, it was destroyed by the militant clergy of Mt. Hiei in 1387. Undeterred, the monks rebuilt the temple, renaming it Ryu-hon-ji in 1393. It again faced destruction in 1413, forcing the monks to flee to Tanba Province. The temple grounds were claimed by Mt. Hiei, and Honno-ji Temple was built on the site. The Ryu-hon-ji monks returned to Kyoto, rebuilding their temple at Gojo-dori and Omiya-dori Avenues in defiance. But fate had other plans. In 1536, the militant clergy of Mt. Hiei destroyed the temple once again, during the Tenbun Hokke War. And still, the monks rebuilt. Finally, in the late 16th century, Hideyoshi Toyotomi ordered the temple to be relocated to Kyogoku Imadegawaji Terano-machi. Tragedy struck again in 1708, when the Great Hoei Fire ravaged the temple. Once more, they rose from the ashes, rebuilding at its current location. In spite of the numerous challenges, the temple endured, a beacon of faith and resilience. Today, the Ryu-hon-ji Temple stands as one of the original temples of the Nichiren sect, renowned for its history, its beauty, and the spirit of its monks.
