Envision yourself transported back to 1358. Ryosokuin, then known as Chisokuin, is newly built. It stands as a tribute to the revered Rinzai priest, Ryusan Tokuken. Ryosokuin, nestled within the grounds of Kenninji Temple, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Originally named Chisokuin, it tragically burned down in 1552. From the ashes, it rose again, reborn as Ryosokuin. The name “Chisokuin” derives from the Zen Buddhist phrase, “Ware tada taru wo shiru.” This translates to “I simply know what is enough.” This philosophy of contentment permeates the serene atmosphere of Ryosokuin. Later, the temple adopted the name Ryosokuin. This new name, derived from “Ryosoku-son,” is an honorific title for Buddha. Inside the temple grounds, you’ll discover a haven of tranquility. The Hojo Garden is a dry landscape masterpiece. It’s adorned with moss, meticulously arranged stones, and ancient pine trees. This garden was redesigned during the Momoyama period. Another gem is the Shoin Garden. This garden features a pond encircled by a path, a classic Chisen-kaiyushiki-teien style. It is recognized as a place of scenic beauty by the Kyoto Prefectural Government. During the rainy season, the hangesho flowers bloom around the pond. Their vibrant beauty has earned Ryosokuin the local nickname, “the temple of hangesho.” Beside the pond, you’ll find two tea houses. One is the “Water Pavilion,” a replica of the Nyoan style favored by Oda Arirakusai. The other is Rinchi-tei, a traditional tea house with a six-tatami mat seating area. Ryosokuin offers a unique opportunity to experience zazen, a form of Zen meditation. This practice aims to achieve absolute relaxation by freeing the mind from attachments, fears, and desires. The temple also holds a special connection to the culinary world. It’s believed that manju, a steamed bean-jam bun, was first introduced to Japan here. This claim has earned Ryosokuin another nickname: “The Founding Temple of Manju.” Ryosokuin stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring power of Zen Buddhism.
