Do you see this unassuming building? This is the Ryon Engineering Laboratory, a place where innovation and learning collide. Constructed in 1965, Ryon Engineering Laboratory has been a cornerstone of Rice University’s engineering program for generations. What makes Ryon Engineering Laboratory truly unique is a remarkable feature hidden within its walls. A giant, open space known as a “bay” occupies the heart of the building. This bay isn’t just an architectural quirk. It was specifically designed to house large-scale testing machinery, allowing students and faculty to push the boundaries of engineering. Sadly, that impressive vista is now obscured, a testament to the ever-changing needs of research. But even though the bay is hidden, the spirit of innovation it represents is still very much alive within these walls.
