It all began in Nuremberg with a man named Heinrich Uttendoerffer and his humble laboratory producing ignition charges.

RWS stands for “Rheinisch-Westfälische Sprengstoff-Actien-Gesellschaft”. This translates to “Rhinish-Westphalian Explosives Stock Company”. The company was founded in Cologne in 1886. Three decades after its inception, Heinrich Uttendoerffer’s laboratory became part of this burgeoning company, marking the beginning of RWS as we know it. Even after a merger with Dynamit Actien-Gesellschaft (DAG), formerly Alfred Nobel & Co., the RWS brand maintained its independence.
