High above the Bornholm countryside stands Ruth’s Church. It’s not just any church. It’s the highest-lying church in all of Denmark.

Welcome to Rutsker. This small settlement nestles in the northwestern part of Bornholm. Its name means “Ruth’s Church” in the local dialect. The church itself is the heart of Rutsker. It’s a Romanesque marvel built around 1200. While much has changed through extensions and renovations its original character remains. Look at the unique half-timbered bell tower. It’s typical of Bornholm’s churches.

From its hilltop perch 130 meters above sea level Ruth’s Church was once a vital landmark for sailors. Imagine those brave seafarers navigating the Baltic Sea. They’d spot the church’s spire and know they were near home.

Rutsker is more than just a church. It’s a place of history and heritage. In the 17th century Poul Ancher served as the local priest. He was a champion for Bornholm’s independence from Sweden. A true local hero. Rutsker also gave birth to Michael Ancher. This man was a key figure in the Skagen Painters an important impressionist group.

The views from Ruth’s Church are breathtaking. Look out. You can see the surrounding countryside stretching out. In the past sheep grazed this land shaping the landscape. Today much of this area remains natural heathland with heather juniper and conifers. Rutsker Højlyng is a place of natural beauty a wilder side of Bornholm.

In 2009 Rutsker had just 64 residents. That’s a small community. Yet it’s a community rich in history and character. A place where the highest church in Denmark stands watch. A place where the echoes of independence and artistic genius linger in the air. A place to remember and cherish. Enjoy your time in Rutsker.
