Picture this. A majestic ten-story building stands before you. This is Rutherford Place. More than just apartments it’s a living testament to New York City’s history. Built in 1901 as a gift from J P Morgan it originally served a very different purpose.

For decades Rutherford Place was the Society for the Lying-In Hospital. Between 1902 and 1934 it was where nearly 60 percent of all Manhattan babies were born. That’s an estimated 50000 newborns each year. Imagine the constant symphony of tiny cries the hushed whispers of worried parents the tireless work of doctors and nurses. It must have been a hive of activity.

The building’s exterior remains unchanged. The striking terracotta brick and limestone facade still stands as a silent observer of time’s passage. Notice the charming cherubic figures adorning the building’s exterior. They are a subtle reminder of the building’s original function.

In 1934 the Lying-In Hospital relocated uptown. Rutherford Place then became a medical center housing first Manhattan General Hospital and later a Beth Israel drug treatment center. Finally in 1981 the building was converted into the luxury condominiums you see today.

Rutherford Place is now one of the most expensive addresses in the area. Its residents now enjoy stunning views of Stuyvesant Square. The apartments are spacious and unique ranging from duplexes to triplexes. Yet beneath the modern luxury lies a rich history.

Think of the countless lives that have touched these walls. The joy of new beginnings the struggles of illness the quiet dignity of aging. Rutherford Place has witnessed it all. Today it stands as a reminder that even the most opulent buildings carry echoes of the past.
