Could a medical school be a bridge to peace? Here at the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, that dream takes shape. This faculty isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a testament to vision and generosity. Established in 1969 in Haifa, the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine sought to address the growing need for medical education and research in Northern Israel. Initially, 43 students began their journey here, completing their preclinical studies abroad before returning for clinical training in Israeli hospitals.

The Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine merged with the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 1973. This partnership propelled the school forward, transforming it into a full six-year medical program. The Technion’s backing provided the resources and stability to expand the curriculum and train a new generation of physicians entirely within Israel. The Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine found its permanent home thanks to the generosity of Bruce and Ruth Rappaport. Their contributions led to the construction of a new building in 1979. This building, a symbol of their commitment to medical advancement, was later named in their honor in 1991.

The Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine has achieved remarkable milestones. Two Nobel Laureates, Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover, call this faculty home. Their groundbreaking work adds to the prestige and legacy of this institution. The faculty prides itself on fostering collaboration. It sits within a technological institute, a unique position that allows it to integrate cutting-edge technology into its curriculum. This encourages collaborations between researchers in engineering and medicine. The faculty is dedicated to training skilled physicians and pioneering research, constantly pushing the boundaries of medical knowledge and patient care. Bruce Rappaport believed medicine could transcend borders. He envisioned this faculty, the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, as a beacon of peace in the Middle East. He dreamed of Israeli scientists collaborating with colleagues from neighboring countries, sharing knowledge and fostering understanding. His dream resonates within these walls, where collaboration and the pursuit of knowledge continue to pave the way for a healthier and more hopeful future.
