To Palenque?” a woman whispered excitedly to her husband, pointing at a freshly painted Tren Maya sign. “Imagine, all the way from Cancun!” The Ruta Pre-apertura Cancún ⇆ Palenque, a section of the grand Tren Maya project, promised a thrilling journey through Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This route, connecting the vibrant city of Cancun with the historical wonders of Palenque, Chiapas, is more than just a train ride. It’s a passage through time, bridging modern Mexico with its ancient Mayan heritage. The initial pre-opening of the Tren Maya occurred on December 15th, with the route running from Campeche to Cancun. But excitement brewed for the Cancun to Palenque leg, slated for a pre-opening on January 1st, 2024. This new route, part of the larger Tren Maya vision, offers a unique travel experience. It covers 473 kilometers, a journey designed to be completed in six hours, with trains reaching a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour. However, a temporary suspension of operations was announced from December 28th to 31st. This pause allowed final preparations for the Cancun-Palenque route launch. The pre-opening of the Ruta Pre-apertura Cancún ⇆ Palenque marks a significant step in the Tren Maya project. This route expands the network, adding eight new stations to the existing fourteen. Palenque, Boca del Cerro, Tenosique, El Triunfo, Candelaria, Escárcega, Carrillo Puerto, and Edzná joined the operational stations, bringing the total to twenty-two out of the planned thirty-four.
