Did Rusty the Dog always dream of a dog park? Here at the Allen Park Public Works Department, stands Rusty, a unique sculpture crafted by artist Ritch Branstrom. Rusty isn’t your typical statue. He’s a 12-foot-tall, 19-foot-wide, 3,100-pound marvel constructed from a quirky mix of tree trunks, car parts, and farm materials. He even plays with a giant silver ball made from recycled cans. Rusty the Dog first charmed audiences at the 2011 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. He placed fifth out of 1,582 entries, capturing hearts with his unusual form and playful spirit. Baker College in Allen Park then adopted Rusty, giving him a prominent spot on their campus. He became a beloved local landmark. Students and community members admired Rusty’s unique charm and watched as the elements painted his metal components with a patina of time. However, when Baker College consolidated its Allen Park campus with Auburn Hills in 2020, Rusty needed a new home. The City of Allen Park, recognizing Rusty’s value to the community, welcomed him with open paws. They moved Rusty to the property designated for the future Allen Park DPS Facility, just a short distance from his old college home. While the dog park is still a few years away, Rusty the Dog waits patiently. He stands as a testament to creativity and community spirit. One day, he’ll be surrounded by playful pups, finally realizing his dream of a dog park all his own.
