Founded in 1958 the Russisch-Orthodoxe Gemeinde der heiligen Erzengel in Dusseldorf is the city’s oldest Orthodox community. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and a deep commitment to faith. Initially the congregation held its first service in the Jan-Wellem-Kapelle in Dusseldorf-Hamm. This humble beginning marked the start of a journey that would span decades.

For almost fifty years the Jan-Wellem-Kapelle served as the spiritual home for the Russisch-Orthodoxe Gemeinde der heiligen Erzengel. This small community comprised members from diverse nationalities. Their services were unique. They were conducted in German reflecting a commitment to being a local church not merely a diaspora community. The congregation followed the New Calendar a practice that further highlighted its independent spirit.

In 1975 a significant shift occurred. The Russisch-Orthodoxe Gemeinde der heiligen Erzengel became part of the Exarchate of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe. This exarchate based in Paris is a multinational diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This affiliation provided a distinct identity. It also ensured independence from Moscow a point of pride for the community.

A new chapter began in 2008. The congregation moved to the historic St Nikolaus Church in Dusseldorf-Wersten. This beautiful building had previously served as an Orthodox center for various Eastern Orthodox communities. The artwork by Hildegard Bienen adorned the interior adding a unique artistic touch. Unfortunately this beautiful church was demolished in 2021. The reasons were that it had structural problems.

The Russisch-Orthodoxe Gemeinde der heiligen Erzengel faced another challenge. They were left without a dedicated building. They briefly occupied a vacant storefront. Their current home is the St Theresia Church in Garath. The transition was difficult. The members displayed incredible resolve. They continued to conduct weekly adult catechesis. They also held monthly dialogues on topical theological and biblical matters. Their website and Facebook page remain active. They are a vibrant community even in the face of adversity.

The Russisch-Orthodoxe Gemeinde der heiligen Erzengel’s history is a testament to the enduring strength of faith. The community has successfully adapted to numerous changes. Their dedication to their beliefs and their openness to diverse backgrounds make them a remarkable part of Dusseldorf’s rich tapestry. Their story is a moving example of a community that embraces its unique heritage while adapting to modern challenges.
