Across the bustling city of Saint Petersburg, the Russian Timber Export has played a significant role in Russia’s economy. The Russian Timber Export, a name synonymous with Russia’s vast forests, has a history intertwined with global trade and political tides. Before the sanctions imposed due to the Ukraine War, Russia thrived as a major player in the timber market. In 2021, its timber exports reached a historical peak of 2.44 million tons. Companies like Segezha Group, Russia’s largest forest company, experienced significant success. Segezha, once the world’s second-largest producer of pulp and paper, saw its wood pellet sales peak at 259,000 tons in 2022. The Russian Timber Export, encompassing various wood products like sawnwood, plywood, and pellets, enjoyed robust trade with international partners.

However, the landscape of the Russian Timber Export shifted dramatically with the onset of the Ukraine War and subsequent sanctions. The sanctions significantly impacted the industry. Segezha Group’s wood pellet sales plummeted. From 259,000 tons in 2022, sales dropped to 151,000 tons in 2023 and a mere 34,000 tons in the following year. This drastic decline forced Segezha to seek funding on the Moscow Stock Exchange, leading to a more than 20% drop in share prices in a single day. Russia’s overall timber exports also suffered. In 2023, they fell to 930,000 tons of wooden pallets. This represented a 46% drop from 2022 and a staggering 60% decrease from the pre-sanction peak of 2021.

The Russian Timber Export, despite facing these challenges, remains a vital part of the Russian economy. The effects of the sanctions have forced companies like Segezha to rely more heavily on the domestic Russian market. While more than half of Russia’s sawnwood, veneer, and plywood production was once exported, now the domestic market absorbs a larger share. The Russian Timber Export continues to adapt to the changing global landscape. It continues to navigate the complexities of international trade.
